Kybella is the first FDA-approved injection to target fat below the chin. The injection uses deoxycholic acid to target the fat cells in this area. Deoxycholic is a bile acid naturally found within our bodies and is used to help absorb fat. Kybella uses a synthetic form of this acid to help get rid of fat cells beneath the chin. Because this is an injectable treatment, there are no incisions required, and the recovery is quick and easy.
Patients may require more than one Kybella treatment to achieve their desired results. The number of treatments will depend on the amount of excess fat the patient has. Most patients see results after 2-4 treatments, but some may require six. Treatments should be spaced out over several weeks to ensure the best results. During your consultation, you can get an estimate of how many treatments may be required.
KYBELLA™ is a new nonsurgical treatment for submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin.” Each treatment session with KYBELLA™ is typically 15 to 20 minutes. Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
The safety profile of KYBELLA® is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. KYBELLA® can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. These are not all of the possible side effects of KYBELLA®. Call your healthcare provider for medical advice about side effects.
